Framed at the Oscars 2020!

The Oscars are always an amazing opportunity to ogle at beautiful fashion choices and the 2020 ceremony was no exception. Some of the glasses on display on the red carpet were also incredible and many pairs were reminiscent of our very own frames. Here is our lowdown of some of the spectacular spectacles from the ceremony and how to get the look Retropeepers style!

Costume designer Sandy Powell stood out amongst the sequin dresses and stunning ball gowns, with a quirky cream suit. But this wasn’t just a bold, androgynous choice – it also had philanthropic aims. Over the course of the weeks before the ceremony, the costume designer, who was nominated for her work on ‘The Irishman’ got many of the great and good in Hollywood to sign the suit so that she could auction it off in aid of charity, The Art Initiative. Amazing! She accessorised the suit with an orange tie to match her trademark bright hair and a fabulous pair of thick, round, black rimmed glasses. Our Anglo American Optical '180E' Round Glasses in Black are a dead ringer for these and will give you that bold look.

Known for his extravagant frames, theatre singer and actor Billy Porter did not disappoint on Oscar’s night. His amazing gold feathered top and voluminous skirt created an air of drama and his glasses needed to be pretty special to stand out! So, he went for a bling-encrusted golden pair which complemented his ensemble perfectly. Diamonds are definitely a guy’s best friend on a dramatic evening like this! Porter is not only a huge acting talent, who was nominated for an Emmy for his character Pray Tell on Pose, but he has also become infamous for his gender-defying outfits on the red carpet. He often opts to wear glamorous dresses and heels paired with an immaculately groomed beard. For the gem lovers, we have a few pairs of glasses that even Billy himself would be proud to wear. Our Aurora Cat Eye glasses in silver, bronze or pewter and sprinkled in sparkles on the corners will add a wow factor to any outfit.

Spike Lee looked resplendent as he paid a fashionable tribute to Kobe Bryant at Sunday’s Oscars by wearing a purple and gold tuxedo, made by Gucci, with the number 24 stitched onto his lapels. Lee, who is a basketball fanatic, directed the 2009 documentary “Kobe: Doin’ Work” for ESPN. This isn’t the first time he has worn an outfit in tribute to the Oscars. Last year, he also donned a purple suit with a diamante symbol necklace, in tribute of his friend Prince. With a bold colour choice such as this, it’s best to let the vibrancy of the colour do the talking and wear a matching pair of glasses in the same hue. Lee does this perfectly with this pair of round almost mirrored spectacles. Once more, Retropeepers have got you covered with our Anglo American Optical Groucho Round Glasses in Purple Haze. These frames will really give you the wow factor with their great shape and awesome colour.

The big story of the evening was multiple wins for South Korean movie ‘Parasite’ and director, Bong Joon-ho stole the show with his adorable speeches and assertion that he was about to go and get drunk! He certainly let his personality and film making do the talking as he opted for a sleek, elegant black tuxedo and bow tie, accessorised by a classic pair of glasses. Our Hanson Square Glasses in Gunmetal Black are deadringers for Joon-ho’s pair and what’s more, I bet they’re a fraction of the price!

No Oscars red carpet is complete without a pair of sunglasses; after all, it is Hollywood darling! American singer and songwriter, Billie Eilish, who performed at the event, gothed up for the event, with an oversized black sparkly suit, fishnet body suit and killer black claws. Her oversized black glasses with a quirky angular shape completed her cool edgy look. Our original vintage Gucci 2308 Rectangular Sunglasses in Graphite will help you emulate Eilish’s alternative look.
